Direct drive is the single biggest upgrade in sim racing — the motor connects straight to your wheel with no belts or gears, so every kerb, slide, and weight shift lands in your hands instantly. But more torque isn't automatically better. This guide helps you pick the right base without overspending.
What torque actually feels like
Torque is measured in newton-metres (Nm) and describes how hard the base can push back against your hands. A 5.5 Nm base already feels dramatically sharper than any gear- or belt-driven wheel.
Most sim racers are happiest between 8 and 12 Nm — strong enough to feel loaded front tyres in a GT3 car, but not so heavy that a two-hour endurance stint wears you out. Above 16 Nm you're into pro-grade territory that most players cap in software anyway.
Match the base to your setup
